Quetzalli’s Sustainable Actions: Less Plastic, More Purpose.

Published by Quetzalli | Updated May 2025

Introduction: A commitment from the first sip

In 2019, Quetzalli was created with the vision of a tropical, natural, and purposeful drink. But it didn't make sense to deliver this product in packaging laden with single-use plastic. Since then, we've undergone a constant process of review, learning, and change.

In this article, we'll show how this transition is actually happening, with conscious choices made at every stage of our operations.

1. The challenge of plastic in artisanal e-commerce

When we started our operation in 2019, there weren't many affordable options for those looking to sell fragile, handmade products. Our e-commerce site used:

  • Plastic tape for sealing boxes

  • Plastic envelope for invoice

  • Bubble wrap to protect bottles

  • Plastic seal for the lids

These materials guaranteed delivery, but they contradicted our values. Starting in 2020, we began a gradual replacement.

2. Corn extrudate: an easy-to-love (and easy-to-discard) solution

The first major change was to ditch bubble wrap. In its place, we began using corn extrudates —a lightweight, biodegradable, and surprisingly effective material.

It looks like a Cheetos-type snack (the production process is quite similar, in fact), and protects the bottles during transport. Best of all, it can be dissolved in water or thrown directly into the ground.

This change reduced our environmental impact and gave our deliveries a more charming, artisanal feel.

3. Ribbons, notes and seals: every detail matters

Adhesive tape : We've replaced plastic tape with kraft paper tape . In some cases, we still use gummed tape with a protective thread, which is required by some shipping companies. But we're still looking for a 100% recyclable option.

Invoice : We avoid using plastic envelopes for invoices as much as possible. Whenever the shipping company allows it, we use paper options or glue them to the inside of the box.

Bottle seals : This is still a challenge. We haven't found a solution that is both safe and environmentally responsible. However, we are testing alternative materials with suppliers.

4. Paper cups: a personal touch, but with purpose

This one's on me, Ken here. It may sound like a quibble, but I confess: I'm a bit disgusted by plastic cups. The feel, the taste, the smell... it all interferes with the experience.

Therefore, whenever possible, we offer biodegradable paper cups at events. We know that many still have plastic linings, but we seek out lower-impact versions and more conscious suppliers. The idea is to offer a consumer experience that aligns with what Quetzalli stands for.

5. The impact of 90 bottle graduations

Quetzalli has become a hit at university graduations. On average, each event consumes 80 to 90 bottles. Since our production is monthly, this means thousands of bottles with a very short shelf life.

Each bottle contains:

  • Glass

  • Aluminum lid

  • Plastic seal

  • Plastic label

  • Paper stamp

  • Cardboard box

According to the Brazilian Recycling Association , only 12% of glass bottles are recycled in Brazil . This didn't make sense to us.

In 2024, we decided to operate with draft beer kegs and taps at events. This way, we've managed to avoid thousands of packages. So far, that's over 3,000 fewer packages produced.

The system is still being adjusted, but it already shows that we are on the right track.

6. Gift wrapping: a new test coming soon

We've got something new coming. We understand that many customers enjoy giving Quetzalli as gifts. But traditional gift packaging is often ineffective and quickly becomes trash.

That's why we're preparing a purposeful gift packaging test . The idea is to create something beautiful that's also reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable. We're still developing it, but we'll be testing it with our customers soon. We're excited to see the reaction!

7. Our next sustainable steps

Sustainability isn't an end goal. It's an ongoing process. And here's what we're already planning for the future:

  • Look for biodegradable or reusable seals

  • Further reduce the use of gummed tape with plastic thread

  • Improve the reverse logistics system for draft beer kegs

  • Create reusable cups for events

  • Support local recycling cooperatives

  • Testing gift packaging with smart and functional design

Conclusion: Because real is better. Always.

Quetzalli was created with one goal in mind: to deliver authentic, delicious, and environmentally friendly products. Our fight against single-use plastic is real, and while the journey isn't perfect, it's sincere.

Every step counts. Every choice is thoughtful. And if you also believe that a better world is made of small actions combined with consistency, share this text.

Let's toast together to a future with less waste, less excess, and more worthwhile moments. Because, in the end, real is better .
